About the Book

On this particular evening, a shell hit me in the shin as I was wading in the surf of the incoming tide.

I wrote Jesse’s Shell after a clean-up trip to the beach. It was a cold and windy day and the sky hung thick with grey and purple clouds. We were having an elNino though and the water was warmer than usual. I had been picking up plastic garbage and had filled a rather large bag. I put the bag up high on the beach and thought I’d enjoy the setting sun while having the incoming tide’s waves wash around my feet. Suddenly, something hit me in the shin! I bent down and picked up an abalone shell just like the one Jesse found in the book. Imagine my surprise!

Sometimes, I still think that the ocean was rewarding me. Maybe it’s true, maybe it isn’t, but I like to think of it in that way.
